Chapter Five

Cindy’s eyes had difficulty adjusting to the dim interior of the house. Nathaniel had insisted on not lighting any lanterns lest Mother Clara and the twins return and suspect something out of the ordinary. Since Cindy wasn’t permitted to occupy the home when the others weren’t around, this made perfect sense.

A sound startled Cindy as she and Nathaniel trudged down the hall toward Mother Clara’s room, but she realized it was just her imagination playing tricks on her. If Mother Clara knew Cindy was in her room without her present, she would surely receive a lashing, or at least go a couple of days without a meal. That seemed to be the punishment of choice as of late. How many times had she watched Mother Clara scrape her food onto Matilda’s and Priscilla’s plates because she had missed a spot on a dish or failed to properly iron a garment?

“All right, where did you see the papers?” Nathaniel whispered.

“I think they were in a box in the closet,” she said.

Cindy and Nathaniel hurried to the closet and opened the door. There were many boxes stacked on the floor, and several more on a shelf, all different sizes.

“It was a small green box about this big.” She showed about two hand lengths. “There were all kinds of papers, but I never knew what they were because they were written in English. But I knew that one had my name on it. I knew how to spell my name.”

Nathaniel eyed the many boxes. “Any idea which one it might be in?”

Cindy shrugged.

“Well, guess we’ll just have to go through them one by one. We’ve gotta move quickly, though.”

Twenty minutes later, Nathaniel closed another box and rubbed the back of his neck. “We’ve gone through every box in this closet and the only thing interesting I’ve seen is a couple of spiders.”

Cindy giggled, thinking of how he’d jumped when one of the creatures crawled up his arm. “It’s a gut thing they were only daddy longlegs.”

“Jah, I agree.” Nat smiled and glanced around. “Any other ideas of where it might be?”

“Why don’t you keep looking in here and I’ll look in the kitchen. Mother Clara sometimes keeps papers in one of the drawers. Maybe it’s with those.” Cindy moved to the door to exit.

“Good thinking. Just remember that we have to hurry. The last thing I want is for you to have to endure anything else.” He briefly caressed her cheek, then handed her the flashlight they’d been using. “Here, take this.”

Cindy protested. “Nee, what will you use?”

“I can open the curtain some. It’ll give me enough light to see into the drawers. Now go.”

Cindy hastily moved toward the kitchen, knowing they were short on time. If they didn’t get out before the others returned…She shook her head, refocusing on the task at hand, and began searching through the drawer most likely to contain the desired documents.

Nat said a quick prayer, asking God to show him where the important papers were. If it were me, where would I put it? He asked himself.
